Writing Intensive Course Information

This course focuses on the biological, cognitive, social, and emotional changes that occur as individuals move across the life span. The course is an introduction to the field's basic theories, concepts, research findings, and well-known scholars. You should leave the course more prepared to think critically about your own developmental trajectory, as well as those of others. Another main objective is to improve your writing skills.

Writing Intensive Assignments

Pages
Paper 1
There are three primary papers. The first paper asks students to apply three human development theories to explain high rates of teenage drunk driving. To do well, students must not only understand the theories, their assumptions, and main concepts, but also apply them accurately to a contemporary issue. This assignment includes a draft plus a revision (5 pages each).

Paper 2
The second paper asks students to compare and contrast effects of divorce and effects of a low-quality marriage on children, and to justify their position on which is best for children. This requires students to review and synthesize scholarly literature in these areas. This assignment includes a draft plus a revision (5 pages each).

In addition to the papers, students are asked in each lesson's progress evaluation to respond to prompts in short answer or essay form. In each assignment, students are graded not only on their mastery of content, but also on their writing quality. The instructor grades all assignments.

Additional Writing: Each lesson (10 lessons total) requires students to demonstrate in writing their understanding of that lesson's material. Students' responses are in short answer or essay format.

Writing Intensive Teaching

Instructor provided feedback

Mizzou Online has rules that help students pace themselves. For example, students can submit only three assignments in a week, exams cannot be taken in back-to-back weeks, instructors have a week to provide feedback, and lessons must be submitted in sequential order. These rules prevent students from submitting 6 lessons in a week or trying to complete a course in a month. This semester, I am also trying a checkpoint system; Mizzou Online sends out emails to students who haven?t completed so many lessons in so many months. This has really helped students keep a steady pace in the course. There are several opportunities for students to make an educated stance and defend it. Several assignments ask for students' application of theory and to justify why one theory might be better suited to provide a solution to a problem (e.g., Paper 1 -- the explanation of teen drunk driving). Other assignments ask for the students to elucidate their thought process and to evaluate their own reasoning (e.g., Lesson 8 -- respond to the Heinz dilemma and how would they classify their own moral reasoning).
Students turn in a major writing assignment (i.e., a paper) at regular intervals throughout the course: Lessons 2, 3, 6, 7, and 11 are all papers (Lesson 3 and 7 are the revisions).
