Certificate in Writing Intensive

The Undergraduate Certificate in Writing Intensive serves dual purposes as it promotes the comprehension of content through writing across the disciplines and increases students’ ability to understand and create discipline-specific arguments through writing.

Requirements

Students will complete 13 credit hours of course work offered across campus. A grade of C- or higher must be earned in each course, and students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 for coursework counting towards the certificate. Certificate eligible writing intensive courses must be completed at the University of Missouri. Students will be required to meet the following to earn the certificate. 

  • 6 additional writing intensive credit hours above degree requirements for a total of 12 credit hours
  • Complete the online Writing Intensive Capstone course (1 credit hour)
  • Writing Intensive Courses must represent at least 2 different departments

A certificate consists of at least 12 credits; at least 12 credits must be taken in MU course work. Students must meet the minimum GPA requirements for a certificate, which in no case can be lower than 2.0. In addition, a student cannot receive a grade lower than a C- in any course applied towards a certificate in the College. For more information, please see Requirements for an Optional Certificate.
