The College of Education & Human Development (CEHD), established in 1868, includes the oldest teacher preparation program west of the Mississippi River. Today, the college prepares and supports professionals in education, information, lifespan, and intervention sciences that improve the quality of life and economic development for the people of Missouri, the nation and the world. The college’s mission is fulfilled by taking a comprehensive, collaborative approach across a wide range of disciplines and professions, including educator preparation, leadership, counseling, early childhood education, special education, higher education, public policy, family and lifespan development, and information sciences and technology. CEHD offers a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as certificates and minors.
The college is a national leader in the preparation of educators with its top-rated graduate degree programs and a teacher preparation program that emphasizes early hands-on field experiences for future teachers. CEHD serves the educational community through research-based professional practice and a variety of learning constructs applied to real-world experiences. The college is a member of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). All programs are fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
All programs that prepare students for certification by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) are fully approved by the State Board of Education. Furthermore, DESE accredits all teacher certification programs at MU. As the Office of Educator Quality at DESE continuously works with stakeholder groups to redesign the standards for educator preparation including certification requirements, changes are communicated to students through individual advising sessions or other university communications. Policies for undergraduate and graduate degrees in CEHD can be found in the Faculty and Academic Policy Manual.
Undergraduate degrees in the College of Education & Human Development include the Bachelor of Educational Studies (BES), Bachelor of Science (BS) in Human Development and Family Science (HDFS), and Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) degrees that prepare students for teacher certification. The college also offers undergraduate certificates and minors.
Bachelor’s Degrees leading to Teacher Certification
Our faculty and staff are committed to ensuring that all teacher education candidates will be successful and competent professional educators. As a research-intensive institution, faculty members engage in scholarship that directly informs the practice of teaching and teacher education. All the teacher education programs involve intensive field-based experiences beginning the sophomore year. Our Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education programs culminate in a year-long senior year internship — Senior Year On-Site Program (SYOSP) — which provides opportunities for candidates to develop strong relationships with students and staff in one school.
Requirements for the BSEd degree are completed through Early, Mid-Level and Advanced-Level Experiences. Early experiences and general education requirements are typically completed during the first two years of the undergraduate experience. All students who meet the minimum admission requirements to MU and declare Education as a major are admitted into Early Experiences. To be admitted to Mid-Level and Advanced-Level Experiences in the BSEd program, students must demonstrate competence in the areas they have studied and provide evidence of readiness.
*Offered on campus or as an asynchronous, primarily online program that requires university-supervised, in-person fieldwork at assigned locations and the potential for synchronous seminars.
Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Science
HDFS undergraduate programs help students develop critical thinking skills about evidence in the science of relationships and development. Students build in-demand, practical skills for working with people in many stages of life, in many types of relationships, and across many social and cultural contexts.
Graduates are equipped for diverse careers working with children, adults, and families. HDFS graduates can also translate these skills to other professional spheres like business settings or prepare for advanced graduate study.
