Certificate in Public Health and Gender

The Certificate in Public Health and Gender is a collaborative undergraduate certificate between the Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Department of Women and Gender Studies (WGST). Both departments present the opportunity for interdisciplinary approaches and a shared mission of understanding the links between gender and health. This certificate is a great opportunity for students interested in the intersections of Public Health and Women and Gender Studies. Students pursing the certificate in Public Health and Gender are interested in:

  • Generating public policies to improve and sustain health for all genders, especially those who face inequity and injustice.
  • Breaking down systems of inequality and health disparities due to gender and other intersecting identities.
  • Promoting health and addressing health disparities due to gender and other intersecting identities.
  • Transforming society through activism and interdisciplinary approaches.

The curriculum addresses global issues, cultural influences, and other factors that influence individual and community health actions and decisions. Students will learn how race, class, gender, sexuality, and geopolitics affect public health through the lens of historical context, feminist theory, and public health best practices. By combining the strengths of DPH and WGST, students will develop a network of peers in both fields and diversify their education through interdisciplinary approaches and coursework.
