Graduate Certificate in School Social Work
The Graduate Certificate in School Social Work program is designed for Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree-seeking students and post-MSW social work practitioners to support practice in school settings and pursuit of state endorsement/certification. Graduates will build awareness and expertise to practice in schools, and of the National School Social Work Practice Model 2.0, certification in MO and neighboring states, and hold the skills and preparation necessary to pursue State Department of Education school social work endorsements. As a result of earning this Graduate Certificate in School Social Work individuals can expect enhanced employability in the field.
Requirements
The graduate certificate is 21 credit hours in length and requires three 3-credit hour courses and an internship in a school setting (12 credit hours). The graduate certificate is available to current MU MSW students and post-MSW non-degree seeking individuals (with internship waived if verified school social work practice experience in US PK-12 school setting). MSW students will complete the certificate during their MSW Program without a need for additional coursework beyond designated elective options. Graduate level social work students will be expected to complete the certificate requirements during their program (full-time or part-time). This graduate certificate program is restricted to professional social workers who are seeking additional expertise in school social work and MSW students who seek to specialize in this area.

Required Course of Study- Degree Seeking
The required course of study for the MSW student follows the same course requirements for the MSW Program. MSW students take one required elective (Social Work in Schools) and one selected elective (List of Suggested School Social Work Related Course) in place of their 2-3 electives in the MSW program. In addition, MSW students will complete their 2nd year field placement (SOC_WK 8971) in a US PK-12 school setting.
Required Course of Study- Non Degree Seeking
The required course of study for the post-MSW degree practitioners follows the same course requirements for current degree seeking MSW students except for the field practicum (SOC_WK 8971 Field Practicum II) ONLY if prior field education experience or current/past employment is in a PK-12 school setting within the past 3 years AND equates to >600 hours.
Proposed Timeline: Degree seeking MSW students will complete the courses during their plan of study. Non-degree seeking students will be expected to complete coursework within two years.
