HLTH_HUM 1000: Introduction to Health Humanities

This course is an introduction to Health Humanities, an interdisciplinary field of study that explores human health, disability, and illness through the arts and humanities. Using a range of materials drawn from humanistic disciplines (including history, cultural studies, literature, film, visual and performing arts), this course develops the analytical tools needed to critically explore person-centered stories of health, illness, and disability as well as the shifting cultural meanings of health, illness, and disability throughout history. Lectures, discussions and assignments will help you reflect critically upon the role of the creative arts and humanities in health-related topics including, but not limited to: narratives of disease and illness; personhood and embodiment; representations of disability, mental illness, patient/professional relationships; the history of patients' rights movements; the politics of care; health policy; and death and dying.
