ITAL 2160: Intermediate Italian
Continues development of language skills acquired in Elementary Italian. While learning new structures and new vocabulary, students also review basic grammar components. By the end of the course, students are able to understand (through reading and listening) and communicate (in writing and orally) in a variety of both formal and informal situations. Offered in the Fall.

ITAL 2310: Italian Civilization
In this course students will focus on a broad range of Italian achievements, sociopolitical events, and artistic and literary movements from the past to the present. Open to any student interested. No knowledge of Italian required.

ITAL 2410: Italy's Cultural Identity in Global Context: Sport, Food, and Art
This course explores the intersection of Italy's cultural identity, globalization, and regional traditions through the lens of food, sports, and the arts. Students will analyze how these cultural elements shape national and regional identities, influence transnational migration and adaptation, and reflect broader social and economic changes. Graded on A-F basis only.

ITAL 2525: Intensive Italian Abroad
An immersive Italian language course which is part of a study abroad program, Babilonia Italian Language School. Students develop and perfect their Italian language skills; gain familiarity with Italian culture via direct experience with people and places while abroad; develop intercultural competencies by interacting with individuals from different cultural backgrounds, and cultivate personal attributes such as independence and adaptability. All levels of Italian language study are available, from absolute beginner to advanced (CEFR levels A1-C2). Graded on A-F basis only. ITAL 2850: Italian Cinema
(same as FILMS_VS 2850). It offers a historical overview of Italian Cinema from the silent era to the present. The course will provide the analytical skills necessary to read and critically analyze a film. Social and historical issues will be raised and examined for each film as appropriate. Gives emphasis on acquiring communicative multi-skills competence necessary to understand and discuss a variety of written and aural texts, from newspaper articles to brief literature excerpts. It offers students opportunity to review grammar components as well as learning more complex structures, to expand vocabulary, and to use the language in a variety of cultural contexts.

Continues the development of the language skills acquired in Intermediate and Post-Intermediate Italian. Emphasis is given on refining writing skills in connection with different text types.

ITAL 3450: Transnational and Migrant Cinema
(same as FILMS_VS 3450, PEA_ST 3450). This course aims to introduce students to the concept of transnational cinema by discussing international circulation and reception of films and by analyzing issues of migration and ethnicity in contemporary films, media, and culture. The course may be focused on the transnational production of one national cinema and/or discuss films from a variety of countries. Graded on A-F basis only.

ITAL 3510: A Cultural History of Italian Americans: Little Italies in Missouri
Missouri is home to vibrant Italian American communities, from The Hill in St. Louis, Columbus Park in Kansas City, and Rosati in the Ozark Mountains to our own town, Columbia. These communities have shaped the state's cultural, economic, and intellectual life through restaurants, businesses, festivals, education, and the arts. Students will examine the histories and impact of these communities within the economic, political, and social context of the larger framework of Italian immigration to the United States. Using memoirs, oral histories, and archival research at the State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO). Through targeted project-based learning, students will examine how Italian American culture is preserved and celebrated. Experiential components include visits to The Hill, Columbia's Italian businesses, and archival collections.
