A degree in Romance Languages equips students with essential real-world career proficiencies—such as critical thinking, communication, and intercultural fluency— that empower students to broaden their academic and professional horizons. Through immersive study abroad programs, hands-on internships, dynamic opportunities for undergraduate research, and interdisciplinary coursework in language, cultural studies, film, and literature, students develop the adaptability and global perspective needed in today’s diverse workforce. This comprehensive educational experience prepares graduates for dynamic careers in fields where cultural competencies create a competitive edge, such as health sciences, international business, education, public service, journalism and beyond.

Mizzou offers BA and MA degrees in Romance Languages with emphasis in French or Spanish;  a MA with an emphasis in French or Spanish (MA);  and a MA with an emphasis in French or Spanish Language Teaching (MALT).  Minors are also available in French, Italian Studies, Global Brazilian Studies, Spanish, Latinx Studies.  These degree programs and minors are housed within the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, home to a total of 9 modern languages, whose coursework also supports an interdepartmental Film Studies minor.

Double majors within the College of Arts and Science, as well as dual degree programs outside of the College of Arts and Science, are common. 

RM_LAN 2200: Introduction to Catalan Language and Culture

This is an introductory course to Catalan language and culture. Previous knowledge of another Romance language might be beneficial. Students will learn basic Catalan expressions, vocabulary and grammatical structures. Furthermore, students will begin to familiarize themselves with elements of Catalan culture.

Credit Hours: 3
Recommended: Some knowledge of a Romance language desirable


RM_LAN 3200: Catalan Culture and Identity

Students in this course are not expected to have previous exposure to Catalan instruction. If they do, it will enhance their learning experience. Knowledge of another Romance language might be beneficial as well. This is a course focused on Catalan culture and identity. Students will learn about the history of the language, the language policies in Spain and Europe, Catalan literature, cinema, music, and food. Students will read different materials in English for the most part. Course is taught in English.
