BA in Art

Degree Program Description

The School of Visual Studies’ BA in Art offers students a liberal arts pathway grounded in studio-driven inquiry, critical analysis, and engagement with visual and material culture. Through a combination of studio coursework and art historical study, students develop technical, conceptual, and interpretive skills that support creative practice across cultural, civic, and professional contexts.

The BA emphasizes interdisciplinary exploration, encouraging students to connect creative work to broader social, cultural, and intellectual frameworks. Students engage in making, research, and reflection while developing transferable skills in communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. The program culminates in a capstone experience, where students present the visual, material, and conceptual strategies of their work.

Graduates of the BA in Art can pursue diverse paths, including careers in the arts, design, education, and work within cultural institutions. The degree emphasizes transferable skills that support career paths that value creative thinking, adaptability, and critical inquiry. The BA in Art is well suited as a double-major and is frequently combined with degrees such as Art History, Digital Storytelling, Film Studies, Journalism, English, supporting interdisciplinary approaches to academic, creative, and cultural inquiry.

Art Students may take coursework across a wide range of media, including animation, book arts, ceramics, comics and cartooning, drawing, illustration, papermaking, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video art, and weaving.

MU students can request a degree audit by logging in to myDegreePlanner. Students may also access myDegreePlanner via myZou, in the Student Center, click on the Academic Progress Tile, then select Request Degree Audit. The audit automatically pulls in the student’s MU course work, transfer courses and courses in progress. This is available to current students, admitted students, and those who last attended less than three terms ago.

Past MU students can request a degree audit by contacting the Academic Advising Unit of the division in which they were last enrolled at MU. For contact information, go to https://advising.missouri.edu/contact/.

Prospective students, can access a preliminary MU degree audit via https://www.transferology.com. Information on the college credits already earned will have to be manually entered before it can be evaluated against current degree requirements.

For additional details on degree audits, go to https://registrar.missouri.edu/degrees-audits/degree-audits/.
