Music

The University of Missouri School of Music prepares students to make meaningful contributions in the world as performers, composers, teachers, and scholars. Founded in 1907, the School of Music is one of the larger academic units in the College of Arts and Science. The primary facilities are found in the Sinquefield Music Center and the Fine Arts Building, which include practice rooms, rehearsal spaces, classrooms, staff and faculty offices, an ensemble library, a music technology lab, a recording studio, and a concert hall.

Over 250 music majors and numerous music minors enjoy extensive interaction with the School of Music’s distinguished faculty. Hundreds of non-music majors also participate in School of Music activities—everything from courses such as “Jazz, Pop, and Rock” to Marching Mizzou. Both music majors and non-music majors can join large and smaller ensembles through a successful audition. Ensembles without an audition requirement include University Band, University Chorale Union, and Sankofa Chorale.

Our Mission

  • To prepare students to make meaningful contributions in the world as performers, composers, teachers, and scholars.
  • To expand the understanding and impact of music through faculty and student performance, composition, and research.
  • To foster appreciation for music and participation in musical activities throughout the campus.

We Value

  • Music’s unique ability to improve the human condition.
  • Musical citizenship and collaboration — serving and connecting with others through music.
  • Creativity, innovation, and diversity of perspectives.
  • A close-knit learning and performance environment, with extensive faculty-student interaction.

The Bachelor of Music is a professional degree intended for those wishing to teach in schools or private studios, build the foundation for a career as a performing artist or composer, or prepare for further study at graduate school. A Bachelor of Arts in Music provides more choice and flexibility, with an emphasis in the liberal arts, and is a good choice for those who wish to pursue music studies but also wish to pursue a second degree at Mizzou. Certification in Arts Entrepreneurship or Jazz Studies may be added to any of these degrees. Non-music majors at Mizzou may consider completing minors in Music, Musical Theatre, or Jazz Studies.

Graduate degrees offered by the School of Music provide students with the opportunity to work with high-level faculty committed to an inclusive environment in the classroom, studio, and rehearsal hall, and course materials that reflect a diversity of perspectives and music literature. Students also have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a faculty member on research and/or creative activities.

The Master of Arts and Master of Music degrees are designed to allow students to continue to develop, according to their emphasis, their performance skills, compositional abilities, scholarly experience, and professional development as educators. Master’s degrees can lead to doctoral study in music. A bachelor’s degree in music, or the equivalent, is required for an individual to pursue graduate study. In addition to these degrees, students may add a Graduate Certificate in Jazz Studies or a Graduate Minor in Musicology. The PhD in Music Education is a research-intensive degree designed to prepare students for careers in higher education as music education teachers/researchers, as ensemble conductors with a strong commitment to music education teaching and research, or as master teachers or music supervisors in the K–12 system.
